Historically, one of the biggest headaches for Indian families was arriving at a trusted neighbourhood hospital only to be informed: "Sorry, your insurer is not on our cashless empanelled list. You must pay cash upfront and apply for reimbursement later."
That era is now officially over. Spearheaded by the General Insurance Council (GIC) under IRDAI direction, the revolutionary "Cashless Everywhere" initiative allows policyholders to receive cashless treatment at virtually any registered hospital across India.
1. The Core Eligibility Conditions
To exercise Cashless Everywhere at a non-network hospital, three baseline conditions must be satisfied:
- Hospital Criteria: The hospital must be registered with the relevant local health authorities under the Clinical Establishments Act and possess a minimum of 15 operational inpatient beds.
- Planned Hospitalization Intimation: You must notify your insurer or TPA at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled admission date.
- Emergency Hospitalization Intimation: In acute emergencies, notification must be submitted within 24 hours of hospital admission.
2. Step-by-Step Execution Protocol
- Contact Your Insurer's Dedicated Helpline: Inform the representative that you are initiating a "Cashless Everywhere" request at a non-empanelled hospital. Provide your Policy Number and the hospital's registered name and city.
- Submit Pre-Auth Details: Fill out Part A of the standardized pre-authorization form. Request the attending surgeon or hospital desk to fill Part B with provisional diagnosis and estimated package charges.
- Insurer Scrutiny: The insurer verifies your coverage terms (waiting periods, active sum insured) and sends a formal cashless authorization approval directly to the hospital billing desk.
- Discharge: You settle only the non-medical consumables or deductible amounts at the counter; the hospital sends the balance final invoice directly to the insurer.
3. What If a Non-Network Hospital Hesitates?
Occasionally, smaller non-network nursing homes hesitate to accept letters of guarantee from insurers with whom they do not maintain a permanent contract.
If this happens, request the insurer's regional relationship manager to contact the hospital's medical superintendent directly. Under the GIC charter, hospitals are strongly encouraged to collaborate to prevent consumer hardship.
