As the financial year draws to a close, millions of Indian taxpayers scramble to optimize their tax liabilities. While most focus heavily on the ₹1.5 Lakh limit under Section 80C, Section 80D offers a substantial additional tax shield of up to ₹1,00,000 for health insurance premiums and preventive healthcare.
1. The Four Tiers of Section 80D Deductions
The Income Tax Act 1961 divides Section 80D deductions into distinct categories based on taxpayer and parental age:
- Category A: Taxpayer < 60 Years (Self, Spouse, Dependent Children): Eligible for a deduction up to ₹25,000 on medical insurance premiums.
- Category B: Parents < 60 Years: An additional deduction up to ₹25,000 for health insurance bought for parents. (Total: ₹50,000).
- Category C: Parents 60+ Years (Senior Citizens): The parental limit increases to ₹50,000. Combined with Category A, your total deduction reaches ₹75,000.
- Category D: Both Taxpayer 60+ and Parents 60+: If you are a senior citizen paying health insurance for yourself and your very elderly parents (80+), both buckets qualify for ₹50,000 each, hitting the maximum cap of ₹1,00,000!
2. Don't Overlook the ₹5,000 Preventive Health Check-Up
Under Section 80D, expenses up to ₹5,000 incurred on preventive full-body health checks, lipid profiles, diabetes screenings, or annual master health checkups qualify for tax deduction.
3. What If Your Senior Citizen Parents Cannot Get Insurance?
Many individuals in India face a dilemma: their 75-year-old parents have pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, and private insurers either decline coverage or quote unaffordable ₹80,000+ premiums with extensive exclusions.
Fortunately, under Section 80D(2)(c), if a resident senior citizen parent is NOT covered by any health insurance, you can claim actual out-of-pocket medical expenditure (doctor consultation fees, chronic disease medications, dialysis, cataract surgery) as a direct tax deduction up to ₹50,000 per financial year!
4. Multi-Year Policy Rule (Section 80D 2B)
Buying a 2-year or 3-year multi-year policy is one of the easiest ways to claim a 15%–25% discount from top insurers (e.g., using promo code `HEALTHSAVER25`).
Under tax laws, the total premium is apportioned proportionally across the policy tenure. For example, if you pay ₹45,000 for a 3-year individual policy, your insurer will issue a Section 80D certificate for ₹15,000 in Year 1, ₹15,000 in Year 2, and ₹15,000 in Year 3.
5. How to Obtain Your Section 80D Tax Certificate
After purchasing or renewing your policy online, log in to the insurer's customer portal (or WhatsApp bot) and download the "80D Tax Exemption Certificate". Submit this PDF document to your employer's HR payroll portal (e.g. Darwinbox, Keka, GreytHR) before February to avoid excessive TDS deduction on your March salary slip.
